USC Upstate student Eliza Culbertson recently participated in the Inter Pacific Exchange Competition, an equestrian show jumping, dressage, and eventing competition held in Hong Kong and in Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China. Culbertson represented Canada in the competition, and competed against participants from the United States, New Zealand, Australia, and Hong Kong from July 23 through August 6, 2010.

Culbertson, a junior information management and systems major, has a great love for horses. She is a member of the United States Pony Club, locally affiliated with Greenville Foothills Pony Club, and was selected for the Inter Pacific Exchange Competition because of the excellent recommendations made on her behalf, her top horse management skills, and her successful show jumping and eventing competition record.

Originally, Culbertson was selected as an alternate for the United States team, but was approached to represent Canada. She travelled to Toronto in order to train with the Canadian team in advance of the competition. As a member of the Canadian team, Eliza placed second in the Nations Cup, triumphing over the United States’ team that placed third.

Organized for older members of the Pony Club, the Inter Pacific Exchange Competition gives participants the opportunity to have educational, cultural, bilingual and competitive experiences.

Eliza is very thankful for her experience overseas. “I’m blessed to have such supportive friends, family, and community,” she said.
