Film Screenings: Best of the Best French Short Films

Discover the next stars of French cinema through the bold vision of a new wave of up-and-coming directors selected from the 24 best fiction shorts and the 5 best animation shorts nominated at the “Nuit des Lutins.”  Movies will be screened Feb. 23 – 25 starting at 5 p.m. in HPAC 120. There will be post-screening discussions led by guest Dr. Peter Caster on Thursday, and Dr. Danielle Raquidel on Wednesday and Friday.

PART I – Wednesday February 23

“L’homme à la Gordini” de Jean-Christophe Lie, 10 minutes.  (Best animations shorts 2010 list)1970s, an imaginary suburb: the custom is to wear neither underwear nor trousers, only orange tops. With the help of a masked rebel driving a blue R8 Gordini, Mister R and his wife plot a radical clothing revolution and the assault of monochromic orange totalitarianism.  

“L’Histoire de l’aviation” de Balint Kenyeres, 15 minutes. (Best fiction shorts 2010 list)
Normandy, 1905. The picnic is over; the upper middle class party prepares to go home. They are waiting for just one last photograph, but someone is still missing from the group…

“L’année de l’Algérie” de May Bouhada,17 minutes. (Best fiction shorts 2010 list)
Paris. A casting session. Actors with North African origins. This is the year of Algeria. An Algerian director looks for the perfect actor. In Paris, of course, nothing is simple…

“La harde” de Kathy Sebbah, 21 minutes (Best fiction shorts 2010 list)
A forest, a gun, and an unexpected encounter; they don’t know it yet but this will be the last day of youth for the four young boys.

PART II -Thursday February 24

“Malban” d’Élodie Bouedec, 8 minutes. (Best animations shorts 2010 list)
A young girl, Claude, is spending her holidays with her mother and her brother in their beach house. One evening, an unknown man arrives. He is an ornithologist seeking for a bird island often mentioned in Claude’s father’s novels.

“Annie de Francia” de Christophe Le Masne, 32 minutes (Best fiction shorts 2010 list)
Annie and her two daughters drive through Spain to go to the wedding of some cousin they’ve never met. For Annie, the daughter of a Spanish political refugee who had gone into exile in France – this trip is a way to renew with a family she has never known…

“Marcher” de Jeanne Herry, 15 minutes With Miou-Miou! (Best fiction shorts 2010 list)
A woman is about to become a grandmother. Just like every other week, this renowned actress walks to her English lesson. But on the way, and after a succession of unexpected encounters, she sees the extent to which the imminent birth of the child occupies her.

“Madagascar, carnet de voyage” de Bastien Dubois, 12 minutes (Best animations shorts 2010 list)
MADAGASCAR is a journey diary that redraws the trip of a European traveler confronted with Famadihana customs. The pages of the diary turn, then the drawings liven up, we cover the luxuriant landscapes of Madagascar before being introduced to the Malagasy culture.
