Spartanburg, S.C. — Several Upstate media and public relations professionals have been named winners in the 2011 Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) Communications Contest, MWSC announced Thursday. The winners list includes Veronica Quick, graphic designer, and Claire Sachse, public information specialist, in the University Communications Department at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

Quick took the first place prize for her entry in the community/institutional relations category. Her submission included materials created for the grand opening gala and ribbon cutting at the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics in May 2010.

Sachse earned top place in the newsletter category for The Business Page, a newsletter for alumni, friends and donors of the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics. She also earned third place in the web site development/creation category for her research and development of The news, the online source for USC Upstate news and information.

Since 1980, MWSC has been the state affiliate for the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), a dynamic nationwide organization of professionals involved in careers across the ever-growing communications spectrum.

“This contest provides professionals with evaluation and feedback from a source outside their own organization which is a tremendous tool for growth and development. Nine women from South Carolina will now have their work evaluated at the national level. It’s an incredible opportunity and honor,” said Kim Atchley, MWSC president.

MWSC’s annual communications contest provides an opportunity to compete in a wide range of categories, and it encourages and rewards excellence in communication. Entries are judged by leaders in their fields of expertise. MWSC contest first-place entries have been submitted to the national contest, which is in the judging phase now. National winners will be honored at the NFPW Annual Conference and Awards Banquet in September in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Neb.

The entire staff of University Communications was also recognized for their outstanding service to the campus community when the office was awarded the Outstanding University Partner Award from Student Life at the annual Student Affairs Awards night, held April 12.

“Veronica and Claire are talented professionals in every sense of the word. They have earned this award through hard work and creativity, and it is certainly well-deserved.  They are part of an extraordinary team that is charged with showcasing this university to a broad and diverse audience, and we are indeed fortunate to have them at USC Upstate,”  said Mike Irvin, vice chancellor for University Advancement.
