Spartanburg, S.C. – College students have been known to  struggle financially, and all too often that means they do not have access to adequate food and other basic necessities. In order to assist such students, the Division of Student Affairs at the University of South Carolina Upstate is creating the Spartan Nutritional Assistance Campaign (SNAC), which will provide emergency food,  nutritional information, and other basic necessities to students in need, as well as educate the campus population on poverty and hunger.

The major focus of SNAC will be a food pantry, known as The Closet, which will be open to any USC Upstate student who does not have a current meal plan. In addition to food, the pantry will provide paper goods, household supplies, and nutritional information. Here is the SNAC Food Pantry Needs List.

“Establishing SNAC is in keeping with USC Upstate’s mission and core values,” said Kara Ferguson, assistant director of campus programs for student life at USC Upstate. “SNAC will provide students with food and other basic necessities that will help reduce stress, allowing them to be more engaged as academic learners. SNAC will also educate students to help them engage in our local community and prepare them to participate at responsible citizens.”

According to Ferguson, anyone can make referrals to SNAC and the pantry will operate on good faith that individuals will take only what they need. USC Upstate faculty and staff are being asked to make donations of canned food, dry goods, cooking supplies, and household and hygiene supplies. Several student organizations are assisting with the project including IMPACT, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Non-Profit Leadership Alliance, and Student Nursing Association. The Closet is expected to open its doors in late October or early November.
