Celebrate Women's History Month By Examining Girls' History

March 8, 2012 at 4:59 pm

On Tuesday, March 13, 12:15-1:45 p.m. in the Campus Life Center Ballroom  a special event is planned that will shift our usual focus in March from women’s history to a related but unique look at girls’ history.

The event features Dr. Miriam Forman-Brunell, a professor of girls’ studies at the University of Missouri Kansas City, who will be presenting her fascinating work on the history and culture of U.S. American girlhood. A dynamic collaboration among Women’s and Gender Studies, Multicultural Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Girl Scouts from the Mountains to the Midlands, and the Cate Law Firm, this event will also include welcome remarks from Dr. Dirk Schlingmann, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, a speaker introduction by Dr. Carol Loar, associate professor of history, a catered lunch, a drawing for two gift baskets from the Girl Scouts, and a free t-shirt giveaway celebrating our “Year of the Girl at Upstate” campaign to raise awareness about Girls’ Studies and about related service learning and volunteer opportunities with local organizations that serve the needs of girls and young women in Spartanburg.
