Shoestring Players To Perform "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," April 12-15

April 5, 2012 at 11:36 am

The University of South Carolina Upstate’s Shoestring Players will perform “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Performances will take place in the Humanities and Performing Arts Center Theatre on the campus of USC Upstate.  Show times are April 12-14 at 8 p.m. and April 15 at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $7 for general public and $5 for USC Upstate students, faculty, and staff.

“Forum” is one of Sondheim’s lighter pieces of musical work and was inspired by the farces of the Roman times.  The story takes place on a street in Rome where romance, mistaken identity, puns, and innuendos run rampant.  The production originally opened on Broadway in 1962 and is still “busting the guts” of audiences today.  Pseudolus, Hero, Miles, and many others are caught in the whirlwind as the plot unfolds, women are chased, and slaves are freed.

This play concludes an award winning season as the Shoestring Players celebrate eight nominations for student acting awards from the American College Theatre Festival and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as well as winning awards in directing and award nominations in set design, lighting design and stage direction.

The Shoestring Players are also preparing a select group of USC Upstate student actors and student theatre technicians for “Almost, Maine,” which they will perform at the International Youth Cultural Arts Festival in London, England in June.
