The University of South Carolina Upstate Foundation awarded 75 private scholarships totaling close to $100,000 during the 2012-2013 academic year.

“These privately funded scholarships are created and supported by alumni, current faculty and staff, retirees, friends and corporate partners of USC Upstate,” said Bea Walters Smith, director of development and foundation scholarships. “Each scholarship has specific criteria and awards up to $2,500 per year.”

In late 2012, three USC Upstate alumni initiated scholarships in honor of special people in their lives.  Ms. Rachel Nolen ’08 established the Sergeant James Nolen Memorial Accounting Scholarship in memory of her husband, James, who was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He died serving our country in Afghanistan on November 22, 2009. This annual scholarship will award $500 per year to a student in the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics. Ms. Daphne Dawson’08 established the Nancy B. Waldrop Teaching Scholarship in memory of her grandmother, Mrs. Nancy B. Waldrop and her 40 years of teaching in Spartanburg and Mecklenburg Counties. This annual scholarship will award $500 per year to a student in the School of Education. Mr. Barney Gosnell ’79 created the Gosnell Family Fund Scholarship to help support a deserving student finishing his or her degree at USC Upstate.

Two other scholarships were created in late 2012 – The Guy, Elma & Marian Murph Memorial Scholarship and the USC Upstate Foundation Board Scholarship. The Murph Scholarship was created in memory of the University’s first employee, Ms. Marian Murph, and will provide assistance to a student in the Mary Black School of Nursing. The USC Upstate Foundation Board scholarship will provide assistance to a deserving student finishing their degree at USC Upstate.

A separate application is required for these scholarships and the application is available online at www.uscupstate.edu/foundationscholarships from November 1- February 1 on the USC Upstate Financial Aid’s website.  Students who are eligible for these scholarships are notified in the summer months and are invited to meet their scholarship donors at a University event every fall.
