The foreign language program of the University of South Carolina Upstate will present its annual “Reflections” workshop on Friday, March 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Sansbury Campus Life Center Ballroom. The theme of the 2013 workshop is “Using LinguaFolio® to Build Proficiency in All Modes of Communication.” Foreign language teachers, from elementary to university level, travel from all areas of the state to attend the workshop.

Educators in South Carolina are already familiar with summative assessment related to the three communication modes.  Participants will begin creating their own LinguaFolio® during the workshop, and explore how to guide their students in documenting language proficiency, setting learning goals, and managing language learning.  Free LinguaFolio® resources will be shared, and future training and networking opportunities will be discussed.

The facilitator of this year’s workshop is Ann Marie Gunter, World Language consultant at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI).  She has taught French and English in K-16 classrooms, and is focused on proficiency-based standards development, support, and implementation.  Gunter’s current projects include NCDPI’s READY and Race to the Top (RttT) initiatives involving Essential Standards and a comprehensive balanced assessment system, encompassing state and national LinguaFolio® initiatives.

Certification credit will be provided in the form of a letter to administrators printed on USC Upstate letterhead, as some districts have used these workshops as staff development for their teachers and have given teachers credit for their participation in this workshop.

A continental breakfast and lunch are included with the registration fee, which is $55. No refunds are given after February 15. On-site registration is available.  For further information, contact Dr. June Carter, professor of Spanish at USC Upstate, at jcarter@uscupstate.edu or (864) 503-5881.
