Outreach initiative exposes thousands of youth to the world of drama and theatre
The Theatre For Youth Class, a program for aspiring young actors and actresses at the University of South Carolina Upstate, will present the popular children’s story of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type on Saturday, April 20 at 11:00 a.m. in the Studio Theatre.
Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type is the story of Farmer Brown’s cows who have found an old typewriter in the barn, and now they are typing notes demanding electric blankets. The hens support the cows. The farmer types notes back. The ducks mediate the dispute, carrying typed notes between house and barn.
The cast includes: Ryan Barry as Duck, Dameron Baston as Farmer Brown, Megan Pridemore as Cow 1, Voneie Leahey as Cow 2, Mindy Elder, as Cow 3, Heather Walker as Hen, Michael Quinn as Rooster, Dakota Capps as Leroy Brown (Farmer Brown’s son), Miesha Greenlee as Baby Chicken, and Temisha McClintock as Baby Chicken. Cody Kelien is sound designer. Taylor Smith is musical director and stage manager. Rich Robinson is director and scenic designer. Tickets to the performances of Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type are $3 per person and can be reserved by calling (864) 503-5621.
In addition to offering the public performance on April 20, the TAAG will take performances on the road to perform at eight local elementary schools. This outreach initiative aimed at introducing elementary, middle and high school students to the world of drama and theatre reached nearly 3,500 children last year.
“This is the 10th year that we have toured with a show and it is such a win-win opportunity for all involved,” said Rich Robinson, associate professor of theatre at USC Upstate. “The children are being exposed to a live theatrical performance, many for the first time ever, and they are the most honest audience we could ever hope for. The theatre students are gaining hands-on experience with acting, stage managing and the technical aspects of theatre.”
Robinson’s group will give performances on April 16 at Fairforest Elementary at 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m., April 18 at Chapman Elementary at 1:00 p.m., April 19 at Chesnee Elementary at 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., April 23 Oakbrook Preparatory at 1:15 p.m., April 25 at Abner Creek Academy at 1:15 p.m., and April 30 at Woodland Heights Elementary at 1:15 p.m.
