Shelby Hicks’ jumper with less than one second remaining capped off a second-half USC Upstate rally en route to a 58-57 victory Tuesday evening over the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs at the Hodge Center.

The Spartans even their record at 3-3 overall while the Lady Bulldogs fall to 0-2 on the season.

Brittany Starling led all Upstate scorers with her first double-double of the season on 12 points and 13 rebounds. Brittany Clency provided a spark off the bench in the second half as she finished with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting.

The basket by Hicks came after the Spartans had several chances in the final 30 seconds to put in the go-ahead field goal. Hicks recovered the rebound off Starling’s missed jumper and took a quick shot from five feet out. The ball hit off the back of the rim and went through the basket with just three-tenths of a second left.
