Nashville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men’s tennis team secured its first conference victory of the season following a 6-1 victory at Lipscomb Friday from the Huston-March Griffith Tennis Center.
Upstate won all three doubles matches and pick up the doubles point to open up a 1-0 lead over the Bison. Rajanvir Dharni and Pedro Carvalho gave the Spartans the early advantage with an 8-4 win over David Salazar and Nacor Ibanez from the No. 3 position. Ramon Simonetti and Yvon Haessig clinched the point following their 8-7 win at No. 2 over Daniel Hernandez and Rob Mitchell.
Senior Matthias Kidler put Upstate ahead 2-0 when he turned in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Salazar at the No. 1 singles position. Dharni picked up his second win of the day following a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ibanez from the No. 6 position.
Haessig claimed the deciding point for the Spartans after defeating Miguel Cortez 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
Upstate goes for the weekend sweep when it travels to Highland Heights, Ky., to battle Northern Kentucky Saturday at 2 p.m.
