Between 11 p.m. and midnight Tuesday a female student fell victim to an off-campus assault and attempted strong armed robbery while walking along the tree line next to her apartment complex, Campus Evolution Apartments.
The suspect appeared from the walking trail at the wood line and demanded money from the victim; when she advised she had none, the suspect struck her in the face and fled on foot through the woods.
Spartanburg County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the incident and said that it was too dark for the victim to obtain a clothing description of the suspect. However, the physical description provided by the victim was that of a black male, skinny, and over six foot tall. If anyone has any information on this incident or suspect please contact the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office at (864) 596-2222 or University Police at (864) 503-5911.
As security precautions, students and staff are encouraged to travel in groups when out at night and avoid poorly lit areas. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially if unfamiliar to you. If a situation, location or person makes you uncomfortable, follow your instinct and remove yourself from that environment. If you have a cell phone keep it with you. Remember that University Police Officers are available to provide courtesy escorts for our students.
