On the heels of one of the greatest careers in Atlantic Sun Conference history, former USC Upstate men’s basketball standout Torrey Craig has signed a professional contract to play for the Cairns Taipans of the Australian National Basketball League, it was announced by club officials on Tuesday.
Guided by sixth-year head coach Aaron Fearne, the Cairns Taipans entered the Australian NBL in the 1999-2000 season and are coming off a 2013-14 season in which they finished fifth in the league standings with a 12-16 record. The Taipans’ best season in franchise history came in 2010-11 when they finished third overall with a 16-12 record in the regular season. The team would go on to reach the championship series of the playoffs, but fell in the third and deciding game to take runners-up honors.
“I am extremely anxious and excited for this new opportunity and new chapter in my life,” Craig said. “I’ve never been outside of the country in my life, but I have heard that Australia is beautiful, so I am ready to experience living and working in a new country. I have seen the city and complex where I will be living and I was extremely impressed. I’ve also heard that the league is tremendously tough and competitive, but I am ready to take on the challenge and do whatever I have to do for the team to get better and win games.”
