Upstate Alum Emphasizes Importance of Degree Completion Through His Role in the Church

Odell Cleveland’s not the only one who thinks that houses of worship can partner with local postsecondary schools to preach the importance of higher education.

Cleveland, a 1984 graduate of University of South Carolina Upstate, is a chief administrative officer at the 4,000-member Mount Zion Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Cleveland was named the 12th member affiliated with the men’s basketball program to be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Cleveland, a 6-3 forward from Charleston, S.C., holds the distinction as being a member of the men’s basketball team that claimed the school’s only national title any sport, as the 1981-82 USC Spartanburg Rifles posted a program-record 27 victories en route to the NAIA national crown.
