Ty Greene scored 20 points and hit four three-pointers to lead USC Upstate to a 63-46 victory over North Carolina A&T Monday evening from the Corbett Sports Center.
Fred Miller added 11 points and three assists, while Damian Goodwin finished with nine points and seven rebounds to help the Spartans finish with a 46-39 edge in rebounding for their second consecutive game with at least 43 rebounds.
Bruce Beckford led North Carolina A&T with 12 points and nine rebounds. James Whitaker finished with nine points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
USC Upstate used a 14-2 run over a four minute stretch late in the first half to turn a back-and-forth contest into a 27-17 lead with 2:34 remaining. Goodwin started the run with a basket in the paint before Miller hit three consecutive 3-pointers and Greene added a trey of his own. Two late free throws from Bryan Akinkugbe cut the Aggie deficit to 29-20 at halftime.
North Carolina A&T pulled to within eight points early in the second half, but Upstate answered with a 10-2 run capped by a layup from Greene to extend its lead to 42-26. The Spartans would go on to lead by as many as 21 points and held at least a 12-point lead for the final 14:26.
The Spartans have won both games this season by at least 13 points and are winning by an average of 15.0 points per game. Additionally, North Carolina A&T’s 46 points are the fewest allowed by Upstate since limiting Hiwassee College to 36 Nov. 12, 2012.
Upstate returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans host Bob Jones from the Hodge Center.
