Carrying a perfect 4.0 GPA and leading the A-Sun in goals scored, USC Upstate standout midfielder Marvin Schmiege has been named the A-Sun Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s soccer and is joined on the A-Sun Academic All-Conference team by fellow Spartan Joshua Jenkins.
Schmiege, a junior from Berlin, Germany, has a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Business Administration major in the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics. He earned CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District honors a little over a week ago and is a nominee for Academic All-America accolades. Jenkins carries a 3.597 GPA as Secondary Education major. Both Spartans were unanimous selections to the Academic All-Conference team.
“I am very proud of Marvin and Josh for their achievements,” said Upstate head coach Greg Hooks. “They are both great student-athletes and are deserving of these accolades. It is not easy to balance the demands of being a student-athlete, and Josh and Marvin obviously have done an outstanding job. I congratulate both of them.”
As tremendous a student as Schmiege is in the classroom, he has been equally as impressive on the field for the Spartans this season. Having scored two goals in each of the previous two years, his offensive production has exploded in 2014. He currently sits atop the A-Sun with nine goals scored, 0.64 goals per game and three game-winning goals. He is second with 20 points and 1.43 points per game. He ranks 13th in the nation in goals scored per game and 18th in points per game.
Schmiege has also etched his name in the Upstate record books this season. He has vaulted to the top of the school’s Division I era (since 2007) lists and owns the records for career goals (13) and points (32) and season goals (9) and points (20).
Jenkins has turned in a solid season as a defender. He has played in and started 13 games for the Spartans and has helped the defensive unit record three shutouts this season. A stalwart in the back, he has taken just five shots on the year, serving as one of the Spartans’ primary last-line defenders in the unit.
Schmiege and Jenkins will lead Upstate into the A-Sun Tournament this Wednesday when the Spartans take on North Florida in the first round of the tournament. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. Eastern with the tournament being hosted by Lipscomb in Nashville, Tenn.
