Fresh off a lopsided victory over Florida A&M in the season opener, the USC Upstate men’s basketball team takes to the road for the first time when the Spartans travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face North Carolina A&T Monday at 7:30 p.m. from the Corbett Sports Center.
Upstate junior Ty Greene scored 16 points to lead a trio of Spartans in double figures. Sophomore Michael Buchanan finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Fred Miller added 13 points and three assists.
Following a back-and-forth first half that saw the Spartans take a 38-36 lead into halftime, Upstate used runs of 12-4 and 21-0 during the second half to cruise to a 78-65 victory for its second straight season opening win.
North Carolina A&T opened its season Friday with a 91-61 victory over Greensboro College. Bruce Beckford finished with a double-double after scoring 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Trey Brown and James Whitaker each tallied 16 points to help the Aggies shoot 52.3 percent from the field.
USC Upstate and North Carolina A&T will be meeting for the first time when the schools face off Monday night. It will be the first of two meetings this season, as the Spartans host the Aggies Dec. 4 inside the Hodge Center. Upstate is a perfect 3-0 all-time against schools from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Upstate is also looking to move to 2-0 for this first time since starting 6-0 during the 2005-06 season.
