Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate senior guard Ty Greene has been selected as the Atlantic Sun Co-Player of the Week after leading the Spartans to wins over North Carolina A&T and Georgia Tech, the conference office announced Monday.
Greene averaged 18.0 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in helping Upstate post its best start in school history during the Division I era. The Spartans are 8-2 this season and feature the best 10-game start since the 2005-06 team opened its season with an identical record.
The Knoxville, Tenn., native opened the week with a game-high 20 points Dec. 4 in a 65-54 victory over North Carolina A&T. Greene also hit four three-pointers to become just the 31st player in A-Sun history with 200 career treys. In addition, Greene moved into fourth place on the Upstate all-time three pointers list.
Greene continued his stellar week Saturday with 16 points, including 13 in the second half, and three steals to lead the Spartans to a 59-54 win at Georgia Tech for the program’s second straight win over the ACC. Upstate opened last season with a win at Virginia Tech for its first-ever win over an ACC opponent.
With Upstate clinging to a one-point lead with just over four minutes remaining, Greene registered his third steal of the game and converted a three-point play on the other end to push the Spartan lead to four. He also hit two free throws with under a minute to help secure the victory.
“I give all the glory to God, but this is a team award,” Greene said. “We had great wins this week and we are going to try and keep this momentum going.”
It’s the second time in Greene’s career that he has earned A-Sun Player of the Week honors, as he was recognized last season after scoring 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists at Virginia Tech.
Bernard Thompson of Florida Gulf Coast was also named A-Sun Player of the Week after averaging 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in wins over Florida Tech and UMass.
Greene and the Spartans look for another signature win Saturday at 11 a.m. when Upstate travels to College Park, Md., to face Maryland from the XFINITY Center.
