Following a career-high 20 rebound performance last Saturday against Maryland Eastern Shore, USC Upstate junior center Brittany Starling has garnered A-Sun Co-Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
Starling received the weekly accolade along with Florida Gulf Coast’s Kaneisha Atwater after turning in the best overall performance of her career as the Spartans defeated UMES 60-38 for their eighth straight home victory. The Sumter, S.C. native poured in 21 points to go with the 20 rebounds, while shooting 9-for-13 from the field. She also added one assist and one steal in 27 minutes of playing time.
The 20-rebound effort by Starling ranks tied for fifth in school history and is the first time since Paulina Zaveckaite against Stetson on Feb. 25, 2012 that an Upstate player has had 20 or more rebounds in a game. She grabbed 11 rebounds in the first half as the Spartans held Maryland Eastern Shore to just 10 points, which is the lowest scored in a half by an Upstate opponent since St. Andrews recorded six back during the 2012-13 campaign.
Starling is second in the conference this season in field-goal percentage at 50.5% and third in rebounds with 8.5 per game. She leads the team in rebounding while sitting second in scoring at 12.3 points per game.
The Spartans are back in action Wednesday evening as they host Morehead State at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
