Ty Greene scored 18 points and had five steals as USC Upstate defeated Montreal College 101-55 Tuesday night from the Hodge Center.
Josh Cuthbertson added a career-high 14 points with seven rebounds and seven assists in his first start in an Upstate uniform. Ramel Thompkins, Jacob Schulte and Tristan Thomas had 12 points apiece and Michael Buchanan finished with 10 as the Spartans reached the century mark for the third time this season.
The balanced effort helped Upstate capture its 10th victory before the start of January for the first time in school history.
Will Lewis lead Montreat with 14 points and Joshua Foster added 11. The Cavaliers turned the ball over 22 times and were outscored 56-16 in points in the paint. Upstate, which entered the game fifth in the nation in steals per game, finished with 14 for its seventh game of the season with at least 10 steals.
Melvin Irvin pulled Montreat within five points with a jumper at the 12:34 mark of the first half. That’s when Upstate used a 25-0 run over the next 6:44 to build a 37-7 lead with just over six minutes remaining. The Spartans would lead 50-19 at halftime and open the second half on a 14-5 run to take a 40-point lead.
Upstate returns to action Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Hampton to the Hodge Center.
