Memphis, Tenn. – The USC Upstate men’s basketball team plays its final game before Christmas Saturday at 4 p.m. when the Spartans take on Mississippi State from the Mississippi Coliseum.
Upstate seeks its second straight win over an opponent from the Southeastern Conference, as the Spartans earned the program’s first victory over the league last season with a win at South Carolina. Should Upstate pick up a victory over Mississippi State, it would mark the second consecutive year the Spartans have defeated both an ACC and SEC school in the same season.
The Spartans enter play coming off an 83-73 setback Wednesday at Memphis. Senior guard Ty Greene scored a game-high 25 points to go along with a career-best six steals and ranks second in the conference in scoring (16.7 ppg) and first in steals (2.5 spg).
Fred Miller added 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals against the Tigers and stands sixth in the A-Sun with 13.5 points per game and third with 4.0 assists per game. Michael Buchanan registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and is second in the league with two double-doubles.
Mississippi State lost its fourth straight game Wednesday when it fell 69-55 at home to Arkansas State. The Bulldogs have not won since downing St. Louis 75-50 Nov. 28.
Guard Fred Thomas leads Mississippi State with 12. 0 points per game and owns a .400 three-point field goal percentage. Forward Roquez Johnson also pours in 12.0 points per game to go along with 5.3 rebounds per game. Gavin Ware paces the Bulldogs with 6.2 rebounds per game.
USC Upstate and Mississippi State will be meeting on the hardwood for the first time when the schools tipoff Saturday. The Spartans are 1-8 all-time against the SEC following last year’s win at South Carolina.
