Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate senior guard Ty Greene earned his third Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honor, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
Greene averaged 27.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.5 assists last week in leading Upstate to a 1-1 overall record in games against Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. The Knoxville, Tenn., native also shot 50.0 percent (18-for-36) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from three-point range and 92.3 percent (12-for-13) from the free throw line.
Greene opened the week with 26 points, three assists and two steals Thursday against Florida Gulf Coast en route to his eighth 20-point performance of the season. He scored 19 points in the second half and gave Upstate its first lead of the game with an old fashioned three-point play late in the second half.
On Saturday against Stetson, Greene tied a career-high with 29 points to go along with six rebounds and four steals in helping Upstate earn a lopsided 91-67 victory. He finished 8-for-12 from the field and tied a career-high with six three-pointers. Additionally, it was his third straight game with at least 20 points.
“The biggest thing for our team was to get a win after losing three straight one possession games,” Greene said. “I was going to do everything I possibly could to help the team, and I just give God the glory for the recognition.”
His performance against the Hatters allowed him to become the first player in Upstate history to rank in the top 5 in career points, three-pointers, free throws and steals.
Greene also joins former Upstate great Torrey Craig as the only two players in school history to be named A-Sun Player of the Week three times in the same season. Craig was tabbed A-Sun Player of the Week four times during the 2011-12 season.
Greene and the Spartans return to the hardwood Thursday at 7 p.m. at Jacksonville.
