Ty Greene scored 22 points and USC Upstate won its fourth straight game following a 61-49 victory over UMKC Tuesday night from Municipal Auditorium.
It’s the sixth time this season Greene has registered at least 20 points and the first time since the 1990-91 season Upstate has won four non-conference road games.
Mario Blessing scored 12 points and had two steals and Jacob Schulte added nine points and five rebounds off the bench.
Frank Williams led UMKC with 15 points and three 3-pointers and Martez Harrison finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
Harrison pulled UMKC within one point with a jumper in the lane midway through the second half. Greene answered on the other end with a three-pointer to ignite a 12-3 run to put the Spartans ahead 50-40 with 8:24 remaining.
Deshon Taylor cut Upstate’s lead to 50-45 on a layup with 6:25 remaining, but Upstate used a 7-0 run over the next 2:10 to extend its lead to 12.
Fred Miller put Upstate ahead 9-5 with 13:11 remaining in the first half before UMKC used a 9-1 run to build a 14-10 lead midway through the period. The two teams went back-and-forth for the next 10 minutes before a three-pointer from Blessing gave Upstate a 29-25 lead with 52 seconds left. Two free throws by Reese Holiday just before halftime cut the lead to 29-27.
Upstate returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans open conference play by hosting Kennesaw State from the Hodge Center.
