Greene Leads Upstate to Win at Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Fla. – Ty Greene scored 22 points and hit five three-pointers to lead USC Upstate to a 78-65 victory over Jacksonville Thursday from Veterans Memorial Arena.

 

Greene has scored at least 20 points in four straight games and leads the Atlantic Sun in scoring with 18.6 points per game. The Knoxville, Tenn., native is also tied atop the Atlantic Sun with Dallas Moore of North Florida for the most 20-point games with 10.

Michael Buchanan added 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench and Fred Miller finished with 11 points and six assists. Josh Cuthbertson registered nine points, four rebounds and five assists to help Upstate register over 20 assists for the second straight game.

Kori Babineaux led Jacksonville with 22 points and Andris Misters and Josh Adeyeye had 10 points apiece. Antwon Clayton tallied six points and nine rebounds off the bench.

USC Upstate built an 11-4 lead six minutes into the game on buckets from four different Spartans. Marvin Smith gave Upstate its largest lead of the half when his layup with just under six minutes left put the Spartans ahead 39-25.

Jacksonville used a 9-0 run over the next 3:17 to cut the Upstate deficit to five, but Mario Blessing answered with a three-pointer and Miller hit a jumper from the elbow to put the Spartans ahead 44-34 at halftime.

Greene scored nine of Upstate’s first 11 points of the second half to help the Spartans open up a 55-40 lead at the 14:13 mark. Upstate led the entire second half by double digits and took it largest lead of the game with just under three minutes left on a jumper from Cuthbertson.

Upstate wraps up the weekend Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans face North Florida from the UNF Arena.
