The USC Upstate men’s tennis team begins a six-match road trip Tuesday at 3 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Greenville, S.C., to face Furman from the Mickel Tennis Center.

The Spartans opened the season Jan. 22 with a 6-1 home loss to Gardner-Webb. Despite the setback, Upstate freshman John Giakoumakis shined in his spring debut with a pair of victories. Giakoumakis and partner Viktor Selander posted a 6-2 win from the No. 2 doubles position. Giakoumakis would go on to register a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 5 singles position.

Furman dropped to 0-5 this season followings its 6-1 loss Saturday at Georgia Tech. The Paladins have also lost matches to Denver, Louisiana-Lafayette, UCF and South Carolina.

The Paladins return seven players from last season’s team that posted a 16-9 overall record and an 8-1 mark in Southern Conference play. Kelly Jones is in his fourth season as head coach and led the Paladins to the finals of the 2014 conference tournament.

Tuesday will mark the third meeting between the two schools. The teams last met in 1992, when the Paladins recorded a 5-2 victory in Greenville to tie the series at 1-1.
