The USC Upstate women’s tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback at Furman in its opening match of the spring season Wednesday from the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center.
Upstate posted the first win of the match when the duo of Anna Zoske and Isabel von Stryk defeated Ansley Speaks and Alex Moreno-Kaste 6-0 from the No. 1 doubles position. Blair Martin and Harper Caswell took the next match with a 6-1 victory over Nina Roell and Nona Ruppert at No. 2. Karlee Bryde and Joan van Lochem clinched the point for Furman following their 6-2 win over Sarah Vande Berg and Sharlee Deshmukh at No. 3.
Bryde extended the Furman lead to 2-0 when she turned in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Roell at the No. 4 singles position. Speaks put the Paladins ahead 3-0 following her 6-4, 6-4 victory over von Stryk at No. 1. Caswell clinched the match for Furman at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Vande Berg.
Upstate returns to the court Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Wilmington, N.C., to face UNC Wilmington from the UNC Wilmington Tennis Complex.
