The USC Upstate track and field team is making a return trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. this weekend as it heads to the JDL Fast Track for the Hilton Garden Invitational.
This weekend marks the second of three trips to the JDL Fast Track as the Spartans will go back Feb. 28-Mar. 1 for the A-Sun Indoor Championships. Upstate opened its indoor season in Winston-Salem on Dec. 1 with the UNCG Six-Way Meet, which saw a total of 18 top-five finishes turned in as well as KeAndrea Ladson breaking the school record in the 60-meter hurdles.
Last weekend at Clemson’s Bob Pollock Classic, the Spartans registered 26 personal-best marks and 15 top-5 performances. A total of three school records were also broken during the opening day of competition. Brittany Walls set two school records last Friday in the high jump and pentathlon while Draneisha Griffin became the new record holder in the long jump. Semaj Tolliver, Alexis Jacobs, Jacob Collins, Kyle Jones and Cody Ellison compiled the top individual performances over the weekend as each finished 2nd in their respective event. On Saturday, Griffin Eubanks had the best finish individually after a 3rd-place showing in the 3000-meter run.
The Hilton Garden Invitational will kick off at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon with the preliminaries of the women’s 60-meter hurdles followed by the men’s weight throw and women’s high jump. The day’s events will conclude at 9:05 p.m. with the men’s 800-meter run unseeded. The schedule for Saturday starts with the men’s and women’s shot put at 9 a.m. and lasts until 4:45 p.m. with the running of the men’s 4×400-meter relay.
Upstate heads back to Johnson City, Tenn. next weekend (Feb. 6-7) to compete in the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational.
