Upstate Defeated by Gardner-Webb in Home Opener

The USC Upstate men’s tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Gardner-Webb Thursday from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex in the season opening match of the spring schedule.

Gardner-Webb claimed two of the three doubles matches to win the point and take a 1-0 lead, as the Bulldogs won matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The Upstate duo of Viktor Selander and John Giakoumakis posted a 6-2 win over Korhan Ates and Benjamin Kazsas from the No. 2 position.

The Bulldogs would go on to claim five of six singles matches to improve to 1-1 overall. Gardner-Webb was victorious at the No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 positions.

Giakoumakis earned his second win of the match when he bested Ates 6-2, 6-4 from the No. 5 position.

Upstate returns to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Greenville, S.C. to take on Furman.
