The USC Upstate women’s basketball team hosts Kennesaw State at 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams.
The Spartans record fell to 8-7 on Wednesday with a 74-59 defeat at Furman in their non-conference finale. Kristen Dickerson led Upstate with 13 points and Brittany Clency added 11 off the bench. Maddie Herr finished with eight points, and Brittany Starling and Travonda Haddock each had seven. Starling pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and Haddock contributed six.
Starling and Sharmayne Edwards are both scoring in double-figures this season for the Spartans with Edwards pacing the team at 12.8 points per game. Starling adds 12.7 points and a team-high 9.5 rebounds per game to rank third in the A-Sun in rebounding. Clency is sixth in the conference in assists as she leads the team with 3.1 per game.
Kennesaw State sits at 11-4 overall and are led by third-year head coach Nitra Perry. The Owls have three players averaging over 10.0 points per game with Deandrea Sawyers pouring in a team-leading 14.7 per game. Jasmine McAllister is second with 14.5 points to go with 11.3 rebounds to lead the team in that category. Kristina Wells averages 11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while dishing out a team-best 3.6 assists per contest.
KSU holds a 20-11 series lead over Upstate, but the Spartans have won four in a row including both games last season by scores of 72-64 in Spartanburg and 90-78 at Kennesaw. Alex Stanford averaged 25.0 points per game last season against the Owls including a career-high 28 in the eight-point victory at the Hodge Center. She added 22 points in the win at Kennesaw and Starling chipped in with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
