The USC Upstate women’s basketball team concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule Wednesday evening against the Furman Paladins at 7 p.m. at Timmons Arena in Greenville.
The Spartans improved to 8-6 on the season last Saturday after capturing their 11th-straight home win with a 70-58 victory over Norfolk State. Brittany Starling, the reigning A-Sun Co-Player of the Week, recorded her second straight double-double, 12 points and 19 rebounds, to pace the Upstate offense on 5-of-8 shooting. Sharmayne Edwards added 12 points to tie with Starling for the team-lead and Kristen Dickerson contributed 11. Both Edwards and Dickerson had four assists each.
Starling and Edwards are leading the Spartans offensively this season with both averaging in double-figures. Edwards is scoring a team-high 13.4 points per game to rank eighth in the A-Sun while Starling is 10th at 13.1 points. Starling also leads the league in field-goal percentage (53.7%) and sits third in rebounding with a team-best 9.6 per game. Brittany Clency is sixth in assists with 3.1 per game.
Nationally, Clency is sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio, and Starling ranks 60th or better in field-goal percentage (31st), double-doubles (49th) and rebounds per game (57th).
Furman currently sits at 10-5 on the season and is led by fifth-year head coach Jackie Carson. She holds a 69-68 career record as a coach. The Paladins have three players averaging in double-figures led by Preseason SoCon Player of the Year Brittany Hodges at 13.3 points per game. Whitney Bunn (12.9) and Holli Wilkins (12.0) are also scoring over 10.0 points per contest. Hodges leads the team in rebounding with 9.7 per game, while Bunn dishes out 6.9 assists per game.
Upstate trails Furman in the all-time series 8-5, and 5-2 playing in Greenville, but won 65-55 last season in Greenville. Alex Stanford scored a game-high 19 points to lead three Spartans in double-digits along with Clency (17) and Raven Jefferson (10). Starling also had a team-high eight rebounds.
