USC Upstate’s student-athletes posted another standout semester in the classroom in the fall semester of 2014 and broke the department’s record for average GPA in a semester, posting a 3.163 GPA.

The 3.163 GPA topped the old record of 3.135 in the fall of 2012. It marks the seventh time in departmental history that Upstate’s teams have combined to average a GPA above 3.0. Upstate had 236 student-athletes on team rosters in the fall with more than 63 percent of the student-athletes earning a GPA of 3.0 or better.

“Our student-athletes work hard to balance their workload in the classroom with what they have to do to compete on one of our athletic teams,” said Upstate athletic director Lee Fowler. “I have been in the business a long time and I can tell you how difficult it is to put the effort into both areas and be successful. Our student-athletes have shown a commitment to their academics that matches their commitment to their teams. I continue to be impressed with them and look forward to seeing even more excellence in our academic endeavors.”

The 3.163 GPA last fall also was a marked improvement over the GPA recorded in the fall of 2013 when the Spartans posted a solid 3.086. The fall 2014 GPA was nearly a full tenth of a point better than the 2013 fall semester. In addition, the women’s teams led the way with a 3.293 GPA, while the men’s teams topped the 3.0 mark for the third time in the history of the department.

The women’s tennis team led the athletic department’s effort with a stout 3.838 GPA. It marked the fourth consecutive semester that either the women’s or men’s tennis teams have posted the top GPA in the department (women spring 2013, men fall 2013 and spring 2014). The men’s tennis team was second at 3.559 and was followed by volleyball (3.492), women’s golf (3.466), women’s soccer (3.440), men’s soccer (3.295), women’s cross country (3.214), softball (3.142), men’s golf (3.100) and men’s cross country (3.092) among the teams that averaged above a 3.0 in the fall.

Upstate student-athletes also posted 14 perfect 4.0 GPAs in the fall. The Spartans who earned a perfect mark were Matthew Bennion (men’s tennis), Emily Dingley (women’s soccer), Michelangelo Dovidio (men’s soccer), James Fowlkes (baseball), Logan Ray (men’s cross country), Rachel Reiling (women’s golf), Nina Roell (women’s tennis), Nona Ruppert (women’s tennis), Emma Safranek (women’s soccer), Jaden Savage (baseball), Tom Schofield (men’s golf), Jacob Schulte (men’s basketball), Leon Schwarzer (men’s soccer) and Robert Smith (men’s soccer).
