Clemson, S.C. – Brittany Walls set two school records to lead the USC Upstate track and field team during day one of the Bob Pollock Classic Friday from the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
Walls and Draniesha Griffin combined to break three school records as Walls achieved new marks in the high jump and pentathlon, while Griffin recorded a new record in the long jump. Griffin’s leap of 5.78-meters in the long jump, good enough for a 5th-place finish, bested the old record set by Dominique Nock. Walls passed her own school record in the pentathlon with 3,256 points and her jump of 1.68-meters in the high jump pentathlon event broke the previous mark compiled by KeAndrea Ladson. She would tie for 2nd in the high jump pentathlon and 5th overall in the pentathlon.
The school records recorded by Walls and Griffin highlighted a day which saw Upstate record 22 personal-bests and 13 top-five performances. The Spartan women tallied 18 personal-bests while the men added four.
Walls had four personal-bests during the pentathlon in the high jump, long jump, 60-meter hurdles and points. Also in the pentathlon, Meagan Bailey logged personal-bests in the 800-meter run, long jump, 60-meter hurdles and points. Ladson registered a personal-best in points.
Destinie Sykes and Kennedy Holton both qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles and finished 7th and 8th, respectively, with personal-best times of 9.38 and 9.41. The duo of Semaj Tolliver and Courtney Bradley also qualified for the 60-meter dash finals where Tolliver finished 2nd, tying for the highest individual finish of the day with a personal-best time of 7.81. Bradley also set a new personal-best time during the preliminary races and then later in the 400-meter dash.
Alexis Jacobs tied Tolliver with a 2nd place finish in the weight throw after turning in a toss of 15.81-meters. Kelsey Warren had her best finish as a Spartan in the mile run as she ran the race in 5:53.86 for a 3rd-place showing. Tolliver posted a 5th-place finish in the 200-meter dash following her personal-best time of 26.11.
Storm-Alexis Gandy picked up a new personal-best time in the mile run with the freshman finishing three spots behind Warren in 6th place.
The Upstate men were led individually by Jacob Collins, Kyle Jones and Cody Ellison as each had 2nd-place finishes on Friday. All three would set new personal-best times with Collins running a 4:45.28 in the mile run, Jones an 8.83 in the 60-meter hurdles finals and Ellison a 9:37.97 in the 3000-meter run.
Jones and Kyle Drollette together qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with Drollette securing a new personal-best time of 8.77 in the preliminaries. The pair would finish 2nd and 4th in the finals. Ethan Dopp tied his career-best finish of 4th place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.83, and Patrick Jamison ran a 23.44 in the 200-meter dash for a 5th-place performance. The distance medley relay combination of Dopp, Dan Castello, Josh Lee and Logan Ray posted a time of 11:19.48 to finish 4th in the event.
The Spartans close out the Bob Pollock Classic Saturday starting at 10 a.m.
