After leading the USC Upstate softball team to a perfect 3-0 performance in the Upstate Classic tournament held at Cyrill Stadium and hitting .538 along the way, Spartan Cheyenne Griffin has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week.
Griffin, from Moore and a Byrnes High School product, was simply sensational throughout the weekend and earned co-Most Valuable Player honors in the Upstate Classic. She hit .538 with three home runs – one in each game – to go along with eight RBIs and six runs to lead the Spartans to a doubleheader sweep of George Mason and a run-rule victory over Western Carolina. She finished the weekend with a 1.231 slugging percentage.
“Chey has had a great start to the season for us and she was terrific last weekend,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “She has been a leader on our team since she was a freshman and continues to lead the way for our team. The numbers speak for themselves. She is one of the keys to our success and I am thrilled with the start she has had this season.”
Griffin began the week by belting a home run in the 6-4 win over George Mason in the first game of the doubleheader on Friday. She then played a key role throughout the marathon game in the second game against the Patriots as Upstate squeaked out a win in the 21-20 run-fest. She went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and three runs. Her two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth put Upstate ahead by two and her RBI single in the seventh sent the game into extra innings. She finished the week by going 2-for-3, including a home run, with three RBIs and two runs in the 11-3 victory over Western Carolina.
Despite having a standout career and being a three-time all-conference selection, this is the first A-Sun Player of the Week selection in her career.
