The winners of the 2015 Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest were announced Thursday, Feb. 5, during our Black History Month celebration.
The winners are:
- First place: Dipal Patel
- Second place: Sophia Fafana
- Third place: Kia’ra Geter
In honor of King’s birthday, the University Of South Carolina Upstate Office Of Student Life is sponsored an essay contest to commemorate the “I Have a Dream” speech. On August 28, 1963, Dr. King delivered his prolific vision in what would become one of many defining moments of the Civil Rights Movement. In this speech, King addressed racial inequality, social justice, and unity in a powerful appeal to end racial discrimination in the United States.
For the contest, students were asked to write a modern day “I Have a Dream” speech that described their vision of how the nation can progress as a unified society.
