DeLand, Fla. – Fred Miller scored 17 points and USC Upstate won its 20th game of the season with a 73-54 victory over Stetson Thursday night from the Edmunds Center.
The victory give Upstate its second 20-win season during the Division I era and its first four-game road winning streak since the 2004-05 season. Upstate’s eight road wins this season are also the most since the 2004-05 season.
Ty Greene added 14 points and went over 1,700 during his career at Upstate and Josh Cuthbertson finished with 14 points off the bench. ShunQuez Stephens chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds to help Upstate hold a 45-37 advantage on the boards.
Divine Myles led Stetson with 16 points and Grant Lozoya had 14 points and four three-pointers. Kentwan Smith added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Marvin Smith put Upstate ahead 53-36 with a jumper from the elbow midway through the second half. But Stetson responded with a 12-3 run to cut the deficit to eight points on a jumper from Brian Pegg.
Back-to-back layups from Michael Buchanan and Miller pushed the lead back to 12 points, and Upstate held Stetson to just two field goals over the final 7:03 on its way to its first win in the Edmunds Center since 2011.
Upstate limited Stetson to 35 percent shooting from the field and held its 14th opponent of the season to under 60 points.
Miller scored eight points during an Upstate 10-1 run early in the first half to help the Spartans build a 14-7 lead.
Pegg’s layup at the 6:10 mark pulled Stetson with four points, but Miller answered with his third three-pointer of the half and Greene followed with a jumper to push the lead back to nine.
The Spartans used a 9-0 run over a 4:41 stretch capped by a layup from Jacob Schulte to open up a 39-23 advantage. A three-pointer from Myles seconds before the buzzer left Upstate leading 39-26 at halftime.
Upstate wraps up its road trip Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Spartans face Florida Gulf Coast from Alico Arena.
