Conway, S.C. – The USC Upstate men’s tennis team suffered a 6-1 defeat to Big South foe Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon from the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.
Coastal Carolina built a 1-0 lead by winning the first two doubles matches, beginning with a 6-0 win from Rick Timmerman and Vuk Velickovic over Viktor Selander and Ignacio Garrido from the No. 3 position. Philippe Tsangarides and Kaue Pereira clinched the point following their 6-2 win over Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates at No. 1.
Pedro Leme put the Chanticleers ahead 2-0 when he defeated Spartan freshman John Giakoumakis 6-3, 6-4 from the No. 5 singles position. Pereira increased the Coastal Carolina lead to 3-0 following his 6-3, 6-4 win over Simonetti at No. 1.
Jabor Al-Mutawa registered the deciding point at No. 4 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Rajanvir Dharni from the No. 4 position.
Selander later posted his second straight singles win after defeating Garik Yedigarian 7-6, 7-6 at No. 2.
Upstate returns to action Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop.
