The USC Upstate men’s basketball team puts its six-game winning streak on the line Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans welcome Jacksonville to the Hodge Center.
Upstate improved to 19-7 overall and 6-3 in Atlantic Sun Conference play Thursday with an 80-63 victory over North Florida, as the Spartans have now handed the second-place Ospreys their only two losses in conference play.
Ty Greene scored 25 points and grabbed a season-high seven rebounds on his way to his 13th game of the season with at least 20 points. The Knoxville, Tenn., native has registered over 20 points in seven straight A-Sun games and is averaging 23.7 points per game in league contests. Overall, Greene is first in the league and 18th in the NCAA with 19.6 points per game.
ShunQuez Stephens turned in his first career double-double after scoring 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Fred Milled added 10 points and four assists to help Upstate defeat North Florida for the fifth straight time.
Stephens enters the weekend sixth in the A-Sun with 5.6 rebounds per game and Miller is second in assists (4.1 apg) and steals (1.9 spg). Sophomore Michael Buchanan is atop the conference rakings with 2.7 offensive rebounds per game. The Las Vegas, Nev., native is also third in rebounding with 6.1 boards per game.
Jacksonville has lost seven straight games following its 78-65 setback at Kennesaw State on Thursday and fell to 7-19 and 1-8 in A-Sun play. The Dolphins haven’t won since posting a 71-69 win over Stetson on Jan. 14. Jacksonville is 1-13 on the road thus far this season.
Junior guard Kori Babineaux leads Jacksonville on offense with 14.0 points per game and 3.5 assists per game. Andris Misters adds 13.3 points per game and Antwon Clayton pulls down a team-high 4.7 rebounds per game.
USC Upstate and Jacksonville will be meeting on the hardwood for the 16th time when the two schools tipoff Saturday. Jacksonville is 9-6 against Upstate in the all-time series that dates back to the 2007-08 season. The Spartans have won five of the last seven games in the series, which includes a 78-65 victory earlier this season in Jacksonville. Upstate has beaten Jacksonville three straight times in the Hodge Center and hasn’t lost to the Dolphins at home since 2011.
