With temperatures not expected to get above the mid-30’s and winds sustained at 20 mph, the softball doubleheader between USC Upstate and Georgia tech scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta has been canceled.
At this time, the games will not be made up. The cancelation puts an end to the anticipated matchup of teams that had not met since 1991, a span of 24 years. Upstate owns a 6-4 lead in the all-time series with the Yellow Jackets.
Upstate will now turn its attention to this weekend when it plays host to Bryant and Maryland Eastern Shore in the Spartan Invitational at Cyrill Stadium. The Spartans are coming off a solid weekend last weekend when it went 3-0 in the Upstate Classic at Cyrill Stadium, sweeping a doubleheader from George Mason and defeating Western Carolina, 11-3, in six innings.
Earlier Tuesday, Cheyenne Griffin was named the A-Sun Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com. She earned A-Sun player of the Week honors from the league Monday after hitting .538 with three home runs, a 1.231 slugging percentage, eight RBIs and six runs to lead the Spartans at the plate. A three-time A-Sun all-conference selection, it marked the first career A-Sun Player of the Week of her career.
