Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate track and field team makes the return trip to Johnson City, Tenn. and the Mountain States Health Alliance Athletics Center this weekend for the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State.
Upstate opened the New Year Jan. 16-17 in Johnson City with the ETSU Track & Field Invitational and saw 13 personal-bests attained and one school record broken. Draneisha Grffin became the new school record holder in the triple jump after surpassing the previous mark set by Destinie Sykes. Griffin Eubanks and Martin Morrow each had top-5 finishes with Morrow logging the best performance of the weekend with a 4th place finish in the 5000-meter run unseeded.
Last weekend at the Hilton Garden Invitational, Alexis Jacobs compiled two top-10 finishes and set one school record to lead the Spartans. Jacobs opened the weekend by finishing 7th in the weight throw before breaking her own school record in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 13.86-meters, good enough for a 3rd place finish.
Brenicke Johnson also advanced to the 60-meter dash finals after succeeding in the two previous races. Johnson began by qualifying for the 60-meter dash semifinals following a time of 7.89 in the preliminaries. She then placed 6th in the semifinals after running a 7.73, and would turn in a time of 7.75 in the finals resulting in a 6th place finish.
Two other Upstate athletes also qualified for the semifinals in their respective events in KeAndrea Ladson and Semaj Tolliver. Both runners advanced in the 60-meter dash as Ladson posted a time of 9.26 while Tolliver had a 7.96 during the preliminary races.
Jacobs was one of four Spartans to post new personal-bests with Meagan Bailey leading the way with two. Bailey achieved a personal-best in both the 60-meter hurdles and high jump, and was joined by Keiyonna Gusby (60-meter dash) and Courtney Bradley (200-meter dash).
On the men’s side, Blake Hayes recorded the top individual performance as he finished 23rd in the weight throw following his toss of 13.42-meters.
The Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational begins Friday morning at 8 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles of the women’s pentathlon and goes until 7 p.m. with section two of the men’s 5000-meter run. The schedule of events on Saturday starts with the women’s long jump at 8:30 a.m. and is slated to end at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s 4×400-meter relay.
Upstate is off next weekend before heading up to Boone, N.C. on Feb. 20 for the App State Indoor Open.
