The USC Upstate women’s basketball team finishes its road schedule Wednesday evening when it heads north to Nashville, Tenn. for a 7:30 p.m. EST contest against the Lipscomb Lady Bisons inside Allen Arena.
Brittany Clency and Brittany Starling combined for 31 points in Upstate’s 75-59 loss to #22/24 Florida Gulf Coast last Saturday in Spartanburg, dropping the Spartans to 13-14 overall and 5-7 in the A-Sun. Clency finished with a team-high 16 points for Upstate while adding four rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Starling contributed 15 points and seven rebounds while Travonda Haddock also had seven rebounds. Sharmayne Edwards collected eight points and Maddie Herr scored seven.
Starling needs just 28 points to become the 15th player in program history to score 1,000 points in their career as a Spartan and is 18 rebounds away from 700 for her career. She would be the sixth player to eclipse the 1,000 point, 700 rebound plateau, joining the likes of Deedra Howard, Dawn Bowden, Yvette Moore, Yakeeshia Ross and Chelsea McMillan.
Edwards and Starling are both averaging over 10.0 points per game this year to lead the Upstate offense. Edwards ranks in the top 15 in scoring for the conference with a team-best 13.4 points per game while Starling chips in 12.2 points. Starling sits second in the league in field-goal percentage at 51.2% and third in rebounding with 8.9 per contest. Clency dishes out a team-high 2.6 assists per game.
Lipscomb currently sits at 8-18 overall and 3-9 in conference play. The Lady Bisons are led by third-year head coach Greg Brown, who holds a 17-68 record in his career. Lipscomb is led offensively by Ashley Southern with 14.1 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. She ranks fourth in the A-Sun in scoring and fifth in rebounds. Southern is one of three players scoring in double-figures this season for the Lady Bisons along with Danay Fothergill (13.0) and Sara Bliss (10.7). Emily Eubank leads the team in assists with 4.3 per game.
The Spartans have won four straight games over Lipscomb and lead the all-time series 12-3. Upstate also holds a 4-3 advantage when playing in Nashville including a 91-71 victory in the season finale last year. Four Upstate players scored in double-digits during last season’s contest at Allen Arena highlighted by a career-high 16 points from Shelby Hicks. Starling recorded a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds, while Edwards had 16 points and Clency 10.
In the first meeting this season, the Spartans rallied from 10 points down in the second half to win 71-68 at the Hodge Center. Edwards scored 20 points and Starling compiled a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Clency and Raven Jefferson provided 13 and 11 points, respectively, while both had six rebounds. Hicks came off the bench to pull down six rebounds.
