Lake Mary, Fla. – USC Upstate women’s golfer Payton Culler opened with a 2-over-par 74 and is in third place, as is the team, after the first round of the Seminole Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Timacuan Country Club.
Culler recorded two birdies in her round and was consistent throughout the day to post 74. Her effort helped lead the Spartans to a first round 321 and in a tie for third heading into Wednesday’s final round. The Spartans counted scores of 74, 78 from Eden Howard, 80 from Rachel Reiling and 89 from Sidney Dermody. Malika Allie shot a 90, while Kinsey Soniat and Allie Gennaula shot 84 and 88, respectively, while playing as individuals.
In addition to Culler’s two birdies, Howard made three during her round. Allie and Gennaula each had a birdie as the Spartans finished the day with seven.
Appalachian State opened the tournament with a 305 and owns the overnight lead. Seminole State is second at 310 and is followed by Upstate (321), Radford (321), Gardner-Webb (323), Wofford (332), Dalton State (334), Detroit (335), IPFW (338), Niagara (340), Creighton (341), Florida Atlantic (356), Ursuline (369) and John A Logan (402).
Sydney Legacy opened the tournament with a 72 to take the individual lead. Culler is just two shots back of the tournament lead. In addition to Culler, Howard finds herself in the Top 10 as well. She is tied for eighth. Reiling is tied for 13th to give the Spartans three players in the Top 15.
