The USC Upstate men’s basketball team makes its third straight appearance in the Atlantic Sun Tournament semifinals Thursday at 7 p.m. when the third-seeded Spartans travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to face No. 2 seed Florida Gulf Coast from Alico Arena.
Upstate qualified for the semifinals following its 90-54 victory over Kennesaw State Tuesday in the quarterfinals. Ty Greene scored a team-high 21 points and hit four three-pointers and Michael Buchanan added 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.
The Spartan defense held Kennesaw State to just 16 total field goals and a 27.1 percent shooting percentage en route to their third win of the season over the Owls. It was also the ninth straight victory over Kennesaw State at home.
USC Upstate and Florida Gulf Coast will also be meeting for the third time this season. The Eagles won the first meeting 71-68 Jan. 22 in Spartanburg before claiming an 86-72 victory Feb. 21 in Fort Myers.
Spartan senior and 2015 A-Sun Player of the Year Ty Greene averaged 28.5 points per game and shot 47.7 percent from the field against Florida Gulf Coast this season. In the most recent meeting, Greene scored 31 points and hit five three-pointers inside Alico Arena.
Sophomore Josh Cuthbertson averaged 10.0 points in two games with the Eagles and shot 70.0 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Should Upstate be victorious in the semifinals, Upstate would face either top-seeded North Florida or No. 5 seed Lipscomb Sunday in the finals at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN2. It would be Upstate’s first appearance in the A-Sun Tournament finals in school history.
