The USC Upstate men’s tennis team used four straight singles victories to come-from-behind and post a 4-3 victory over Elon Wednesday in non-conference action from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
Elon captured the first two doubles matches and won the point to build an early advantage, beginning with an 8-5 win for Brian Kowalski and Stefan Fortmann over Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates at No. 1. Chris Humphreys and Neal Port clinched the point for Elon following their 8-3 victory over Ignacio Garrido and Matt Bennion at No. 3.
Bennion tied the match 1-1 after he defeated Humphreys 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles position. Simonetti put the Spartans ahead 2-1 with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Fortmann at No. 1, and Garrido extended the lead to 3-1 with his 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Kowalski at No. 4.
Yates sealed the victory for the Spartans when he downed Robert Lindgren 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 from the No. 3 position.
Upstate returns to A-Sun play Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face North Florida.
