Whitney earned his first career start Sunday against Saint Joseph’s and held the Hawks scoreless over 6.0 innings of work to help Upstate complete its first three-game series sweep since 2013. The Sharpsburg, Ga., native allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high 10 batters en route to his first victory of the season.
Whitney is just the sixth Spartan in the Division I era with 10 strikeouts in a game and the first Upstate player to be named A-Sun Pitcher of the Week since David Roseboom in 2012.
“I thought Blake threw very well yesterday and I was pleased with his competitive instinct,” USC Upstate head coach Matt Fincher said. “At the start of the game he had command of his fastball and he was able to pitch inside effectively. He was able to mix both the slider and the changeup as the game progressed.”
Whitney and the Spartans return to the diamond Wednesday at 4 p.m. against in-state rival Winthrop from Harley Park.
