The USC Upstate softball team will take its 5-1 conference record into action this weekend when it plays host to North Florida Saturday and Sunday for a key A-Sun series at Cyrill Stadium. Saturday’s doubleheader will also be Upstate’s “Strikeout Cancer” games as the Spartans join with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) to help raise awareness and funding against cancer.
The action begins at 1 p.m. both days as Upstate looks to get back on the winning trail after dropping the final game of its A-Sun series at Jacksonville last Sunday. The 2-1 loss snapped the Spartans’ 23-game A-Sun regular season winning streak dating back to last year. Upstate stands 22-6 overall and 5-1 in the league and atop the A-Sun standings. The Spartans split a non-conference doubleheader with NC State Wednesday, losing the opener, 10-1, and claiming a 3-1 win in game two behind a two-run homer from Lindsey Greeson.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 21-15 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the A-Sun. The Ospreys opened league play by taking 2-of-3 from Florida Gulf Coast, but dropped 2-of-3 against Kennesaw State. UNF was swept by South Carolina in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday night in Columbia.
Upstate owns a 21-16 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1995 when both schools were members of NCAA Division II and the Peach Belt Conference. UNF owned a 14-6 lead in the series during the DII days, but Upstate owns a 15-2 lead in the series since moving to Division I for the 2008 season.
