The USC Upstate track and field team heads to two meets this weekend as it is scheduled to compete at both the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. and Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
Upstate set two school records last weekend at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C. Destinie Sykes surpassed her old school record twice in the 400-meter hurdles leading to a sixth place finish. In the 400-meter hurdles preliminaries, Sykes broke the school record for a first time after running a 1:06.28 to qualify for the finals. She would break her school again during the finals with a time of 1:05.05. Essence Jackson also exceeded her old school record time in the 800-meter run with a 2:12.12 to earn her first career victory.
Overall, the Spartans logged six top-five performances during the 49er Classic and recorded a total of 26 personal-bests.
Along with the first place performance by Jackson, Upstate received individual finishes of fifth or better from Sykes, Jasmine Polite and Alexis Jacobs. The Spartans also had top-five showings in both the women’s 4×100-meter relay and men’s 4×400-meter relay.
Jacobs concluded the three-day event with a second place finish in the shot put after her throw of 13.85-meters. Polite was third in the 5000-meter run after running a 17:34.21 and Sykes added a fifth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 11.39-meters. In the women’s 4×100-meter relay, the team of Semaj Tolliver, Courtney Bradley, Heaven Briggs and Brenicke Johnson placed third after crossing the finish line in 47.09. The men’s 4×400-meter relay combination of Kyle Jones, Kyle Drollette, Cameron Pratt and Patrick Jamison posted a time of 3:20.80 to finish in fifth place.
Upstate will be sending Jackson, Polite and Griffin Eubanks to the Raleigh Relays this weekend to compete in the distance events. Jackson is running in the 800-meter run, while Polite and Eubanks are participating in their respective 5000-meter run.
The Raleigh Relays is scheduled for Mar. 27-28 at Paul H. Derr Track. The women’s 5000-meter run begins the two-day event Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s race to follow at 10:30 a.m. The women’s 800-meter run is scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The Winthrop Invitational is a three-day meet that begins Thursday afternoon with the heptathlon 100-meter hurdles at 2 p.m. with the decathlon 100-meter dash following at 2:30 p.m. The schedule of events on Friday starts at 10 a.m. with the continuation of both the decathlon and heptathlon, and concludes at 9:45 p.m. with the men’s 5000-meter run. On Saturday, the first event scheduled is the women’s 10000-meter run at 8 a.m. and finishes at 5 p.m. with the men’s 4×400-meter relay.
The Spartans remain in Spartanburg next Saturday, Apr. 4 for the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford College at Spartanburg High School.
