For the second time this season, USC Upstate standout first baseman Cheyenne Griffin has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week after leading the Spartan softball team to four wins in the Winthrop Adidas Tournament.
Griffin, from nearby Moore and a Byrnes High School product, led Upstate at the plate in wins over Appalachian State, Hartford, Coppin State and Harvard. She hit .700 with nine RBIs and six runs. She hit four home runs and added a double to have five if her seven hits go for extra bases. She also finished the week with a .2.000 slugging percentage.
“Chey has had a great start to the season at the plate and that continued with a dominant performance last weekend,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “She is seeing the ball well right now and seems to produce every time she steps up to bat. She has led us throughout her time here and is a prime example of a senior not settling for what she has accomplished. She wants even more and it is evident with how she has played this season.”
Griffin began the week by going 1-for-2 with two sacrifice flies and two RBIs to lead Upstate to a 7-2 win over Appalachian State on Friday. She then went 1-for-1 with a home run and was hit by a pitch in the 9-0 victory over Hartford in five innings. She was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs as Upstate claimed a 14-1 win over Coppin State on Saturday, then finished the tournament by belting two home runs and accounting for all of Upstate’s runs in the 3-0 victory over Harvard.
Griffin leads Upstate with a .595 batting average, seven home runs, 23 RBIs and a 1.243 slugging percentage. She entered the 2015 campaign as a three-time all-conference selection but with no player of the week honors. She now has two this season in what has been a torrid start for the senior.
