Macon, Ga. – USC Upstate throwers Blake Hayes and Alexis Jacobs were both honored by the Atlantic Sun Conference on Wednesday as the duo was named A-Sun Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Field Athletes of the Week for their performances last weekend at the 49er Classic.
Hayes and Jacobs become the second and third Upstate athletes this season to be recognized by the conference, joining KeAndrea Ladson who was named A-Sun Track Athlete of the Week last Wednesday after breaking her own school record at the season-opening CCU Invitational.
Hayes is the first Spartan to earn Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week accolades since Michael Smith on Mar. 19, 2014. The freshman earned his first career Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honor after setting two personal-bests last weekend during the 49er Classic. Hayes began by surpassing his old personal-best in the hammer throw with a mark of 42.93-meters, and followed with another personal-best in the discus throw after his toss of 38.30-meters. He enters the weekend second in the conference in the hammer throw and third in the discus throw.
Jacobs turned in two top-10 finishes last weekend to receive her first career Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week recognition. The senior had a best finish of second in the shot put following her throw of 13.85-meters. Jacobs then finished ninth in the discus throw after recording a throw of 37.31-meters. She now has three top-10 finishes this season with two being fifth or better. Currently, Jacobs leads the A-Sun in the shot put while ranking 35th in the East Region and 74th nationally.
Upstate returns to action this weekend as it takes part in the Winthrop Invitational and Raleigh Relays.
