After leading the USC Upstate softball team to four wins and being the pitcher of record in all five decisions last week, Lexi Shubert has been named the A-Sun Pitcher of the Week. It is her second career A-Sun weekly honor.
“She has really stepped up her effort every time we have needed her,” said Upstate head coach Chris Hawkins. “She is a true workhorse! I have a tremendous amount of comfort every time she has the ball in her hand. She never fails to impress when she is out there and I am thrilled she has been recognized for a great week of work in leading our team.”
Shubert, a sophomore from Hickory, N.C., turned in quite a busy week. Upstate played in five games last week and Shubert was the pitcher of record in all five. She went 4-1 and earned both wins in each doubleheader at ETSU (March 17) and Jacksonville (March 21). Her only loss was a 2-1 decision in the A-Sun series finale at Jacksonville Sunday. For the week, she had four wins, a 0.72 ERA, 29 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings of work and a .155 opponent batting average.
Shubert began the week by taking a perfect game into the fifth inning in the first game of the non-conference doubleheader sweep at ETSU. She finished the game with a two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. She then came back and tossed five innings of relief to shut down the Buccaneer bats. She allowed just two hits and no runs in helping Upstate score a come-from-behind victory. In total, she tossed 12 innings with 13 strikeouts and allowed just four hits in the doubleheader.
Shubert then picked up both wins in the A-Sun doubleheader at Jacksonville on Saturday, also getting a win in the game one start and in relief in game two. She started the doubleheader by allowing just one earned run with nine strikeouts in the 7-3 victory over the Dolphins. She tossed 4 1/3 innings of work in the second game, allowing just two hits while striking out five in a scoreless relief effort. She finished the doubleheader allowing just one earned run. She was also solid in Sunday’s start as well. Despite taking the 2-1 loss, she allowed just four hits.
Shubert is the first Upstate pitcher to earn A-Sun Pitcher of the Week honors this season. Her selection is the fourth weekly selection this year for the Spartans overall with Cheyenne Griffin twice being named the player of the week and Kendall Settlemyre also taking home player of the week honors. Shubert was the A-Sun Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection last season and was named the A-Sun Preseason Pitcher of the Year this year.
