College of Charleston Pitching Stifles Upstate

Four College of Charleston pitchers combined to hold USC Upstate to hits in a 10- 0 victory Tuesday from Harley Park.

Cougar starting pitcher Nathan Helvey pitched the first four innings and allowed one hit and earned his third win of the season. Will Detwiler and Luke Munson each pitched two innings before Carter Love finished the game in the ninth inning.

Upstate starting pitcher Tyler Jackson took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits in three innings.

Designated hitter Bradley Jones led the College of Charleston offensive attack with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored. Catcher Erven Roper added three hits and third baseman Carl Wise drove in a pair as College of Charleston finished with 16 hits.

Blake Butler put College of Charleston ahead 1-0 with an RBI double in the first that scored Wise from second. The Cougars pushed across two more runs in the second on an RBI single from shortstop Champ Rowland and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Ryan Brown.

Jones registered his first two RBIs of the game in the third inning on a two-out single to left to put the Cougars ahead 5-0.

College of Charleston added runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings to claim its fourth straight victory.

Upstate returns to action Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when the Spartans travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to face Florida Gulf Coast in game one of a three-game series from Swanson Stadium.
